Annual Yard Sale  -  Our yard sale is this Saturday, May 7th

Are you Spring Cleaning? Want to clear out your Garage or Basement or Closet? Donate your unwanted items to Boy Scout Troop 1249 (St.Matthew ’s United Methodist Church, Bowie, MD) for our Annual Yard Sale Fundraiser that supports the many activities of the boys.  We will take just about anything- Furniture, Sporting Goods, Yard Equipment, Exercise Equipment, Household Items, Clothes, etc. Receipts of donations can be provided.

With everyone ’s help, this can be a successful fundraiser.  It has three basic elements.

(1)   We need STUFF to sell.
We will take just about anything - Furniture, Sporting Goods, Yard Equipment, Exercise Equipment, Household Items, Clothes, etc.  Tell your friends, neighbors, relative and office mates that you will take what is cluttering up their garages, basements and closets.  We will gather all STUFF the week starting at May 3rds Tuesday ’s Scout Meeting.  We will continue to gather throughout that week. If you have someone who has bigger items, please let me know and I will arrange for pickup. I also have a handout that the Scouts can give to the neighbors to advertise the event and solicit more  merchandise.

(2)   We need PEOPLE to work.
The Yard Sale will open for business from 8:00 am – 2:00 pm in the front of St.Mathew ’s Church.  All Scouts are required to work. We will start moving STUFF out of Fellowship Hall at 6:00 am.  We setup tables for display. Then boys will be fed (we also sell food). And we need PARENTS to help sell and organize. The boys cannot handle money or negotiate prices.  Around 2:30 the City will send trash trucks to remove the unsold STUFF (we donate the useful items like clothes to Charity). We should be totally cleaned up and done by 3:00.

(3)   We need CUSTOMERS.
We have ads running in the Newspapers. But please tell your neighbors and friends about the Yard Sale. We usually have a good collection of items.

Summer Camp Reminder

Summer Camp is from Sunday, July 24th through Saturday, July 30th.  We are in the process of registering with the summer camp.  We need to get a list of who is coming to camp as well as start collecting money for summer camp.  It's not too late to sign up.  The cost of summer camp this year will be $330/scout.  We will be collecting the fees in 3 equal installments of $110.  We need to get full payment by May 17.

Giving our scouts new opportunites and continuiung with our tradition of going to a different summer camp each year, this year we will be going to Camp Freedom, located near Uniontown, PA. about 200 miles from Bowie.  The reservation's centerpiece attraction is Lake Courage, a 270-acre lake , providing plenty of room for boating, fishing, sailing, water-skiing and swimming.   The camp is located close to Nemacolin Woodlands, Laurel Caverns and Ohiopyle State Park.  With over 60 merit badges offered, the camp has much to offer.

Braddock's Brigade is the first year camper program.   The program allows first year Scouts to enter a five-day program which mixes outdoor skills, Scouting values, and FUN!   Braddock's Brigade incorporates the majority of rank requirements from Tenderfoot to First Class, as well as a variety of classic Scouting games and activities while focusing on the patrol method.

The Day Trek Program is a fantastic adventure for that older Scout that is looking for more than merit badges. Shortly after breakfast Scouts will join our Eagle Base day program and participate in exciting high adventure activities before returning to camp about 5:00 p.m.  Scouts select from adventures including caving, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, rapelling, fly fishing, hiking, sporting clays and much more.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Snider or Mr. Rozanski

Our Sponsor: We are sponsored by and operate out of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church.

Where & When:   We meet most Tuesday nights from 7:30 – 9:00pm in the Community Room at the church.  St. Matthew’s is located at 14900 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD.  Our campouts/monthly outings are generally scheduled on the 3rd weekend of the month.  On the Tuesday after the monthly outing, we have our PLC (Patrol Leader’s Council) Meeting.  Board of reviews for rank advancement also occur at 7pm on the night of the PLC.

What We Do: Being a Scout led organization, we execute the program that is planned out by the PLC.  The scouts also take assignment to coordinate each month’s campout/outing.  Working with the Scout Leadership of the Troop, we put together a program to help to develop good lifetime skills and values in our Scouts.  The focus of our troop is to:

·         Offer scouts responsible fun and adventure
·         Train scouts in citizenship, service, and leadership
·         Maintain a constant outings schedule, with one overnight per month
·         Instill lifetime values and develop ethical character as expressed in the Scout Oath and Law
·         Provide an active advancement program

Some of our highlights for the upcoming year are:

·         Snow Skiing
·         Backpacking
·         Canoeing
·         Klondike Derby
